St. Patrick’s Day Books for Literacy-Based Speech Therapy

Literacy-based lessons work wonders in Speech therapy!  I especially love using with mixed groups and preschool students to target articulation, phonology, language, and fluency. Some of my favorite St. Patrick’s Day books are mentioned below along with what goals you can easily target with the book!

There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover by Lucille Colandro

SOUND SYSTEMS: Target velars, fricatives, glides, and consonant clusters easily with this repetitive story!  Students can even practice carryover of their sounds (k, g, s, z, sh, l, r, th, clusters) targeting language concepts.

LANGUAGE: Target identification and labeling of basic vocabulary found in the print and in the pictures, work on wh-questions and yes/no questions, and practice sequencing and story retell!

How to Catch a Leprechaun by Adam Wallace

SOUND SYSTEMS: Target velars, fricatives, glides, and consonant clusters (k, g, s, z, sh, l, r, th, clusters) with this adorable story about a leprechaun getting out of traps that have been set for him.

LANGUAGE: Target vocabulary building with synonyms and antonyms.  You can also practice answering wh-questions and build phonological awareness with rhyming.

The Night Before St. Patrick’s Day by Natasha Wing

SOUND SYSTEMS: Target velars, fricatives, glides, and consonant clusters (k, g, s, z, sh, l, r, th, clusters) easily with this story about a brother and sister who are excited about St. Patrick’s Day. They hope to catch a leprechaun so that they can take his gold.

LANGUAGE: Target semantic features (function/description) for common items, answering wh-questions and work on irregular past tense verbs!

If you do not want to have to go through the books and make your own lists, I have created an easy cheat sheet for articulation words, language concepts to target, and some basic wh-questions you can ask for each book!  You can grab your free cheat sheet below.
